You may have heard about The Great Get Together, which encourages communities to hold events such as street parties around grand celebrations, like the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. This year The Great Get Together is commemorating the legacy of the late Jo Cox, herself a UNISON member and campaigner for equality, kindness and tolerance.
Our branch would like to join in this nation-wide event and warmly invites all members to a BBQ on Thursday, 29 June from 12-2pm on the Students’ Union patio, outside the bar downstairs at Frenchay Campus. (If it rains we will move inside to the bar itself.) This is outside the official Great Get Together weekend of 16-18 June, but we felt that later in June would be more suitable for most of our members, as it will be after both exam boards and Ramadan.
We will have as our special guest Roger McKenzie, Assistant General Secretary of UNISON who will be speaking about the values of the union, how those were exemplified by Jo and how all of us can carry that legacy forward. Roger is a fantastic speaker and we are thrilled to have such a prominent national figure visit our branch.
This invitation is for UNISON members only but we always encourage new members, so feel free to pass this on to any of your colleagues who aren’t already in the union. They can request a membership form when they RSVP and can even sign up on the day itself.
We will be providing transport to Frenchay from the other campuses, so if you require this please make sure to indicate it when you RSVP.
And finally, calling all bakers!
As a fundraiser for the Jo Cox Foundation, we are looking to hold a bake sale on the day. Therefore we are seeking members who can bake cakes, flapjacks, biscuits and other tasty treats. If you are talented in the kitchen and would like to show off your wonderful baking, you can also indicate this on the RSVP form.
We really hope to make this an inspiring and celebratory event, so please do come along!
