Tamsila Tauqir, Vice-Chair of the University of the West of England
UNISON branch. Speech at Palestinian Solidarity Campaign and Stop the War
rally for Palestine on 13th October 2023 in Bristol, UK.
“UNISON, the largest trade union in the UK has stated that the Israeli government should respect international law and calls on the international community to ensure human rights are protected.
I’m here from UWE UNISON and right now, we are witnessing live on our screens a slaughter, a genocide, the ethnic cleansing by the Israeli state on the population of Gaza, at least 40% of whom are children under the age of 15.
We stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people to resist occupation as stated in the UN resolution 3743. An occupation that is still in place 75 years on, which exists only, and only because successive Western governments – from the UK to the US – have condoned and armed Israel to do this. As (President) Joe Biden publicly stated in 1986, “If there were no Israel, the US would have to invent an Israel to protect our interests in the region”.
We the workers are always the cannon fodder for the fat cats so they can sell more arms. It should be people not profit and wages not war. I call on all workers of good conscience, to oppose the apartheid state of Israel. I call on all workers of good conscience, to join a trade union, get elected into a post and swell the wave, into a tsunami of organised resistance.
La adl la salaam, no justice no peace, free, free, Palestine!”
