Rhiannon Davies(left), Minutes Secretary and Helen Hopwood, Retired Member’s Secretary

Hi, I’m Rhiannon and I work as a technician supporting students studying ecology and environmental science and I’m UWE UNISON’s Branch Minutes Secretary.

I joined UNISON because I believe in the big underpinning values of unions – things like fairness and solidarity. It’s great to see how our union successfully wins big national battles for workers’ rights (for example, like restoring fair access to employment tribunals). But our own Branch achieves so much too: negotiating, pushing forward and upholding a huge variety of policies that affect us all at UWE. I wanted to support that crucial work in some way, so I volunteered to be the Minutes Secretary for Branch meetings, and trained to attend the HERA panels which scrutinise the decisions of HR on grading and regrading of posts. It’s only a small contribution but it adds a couple of pieces to the big picture in which colleagues working together can achieve greater things. I’d encourage anyone who would like to get more involved in the Branch to make contact. There are many roles available, and you can pick one (or more) that plays to your availability and strengths.
