The social model of disability

We all have different needs and preferences that can be reflected in the language we use. UWE’s guide to the social model of disability and language will help you to speak about disability and to disabled people in a respectful and inclusive way.

How much pay are you losing out on?

Pay for staff in universities has gone down relative to inflation over the last 13 years, yet income to universities has increased.

What would your salary have been now if we had a pay increase that kept up with inflation since 2009?

Take a look at our pay calculator to find out.

Another below inflation pay rise…

The final offer is 3%. We're worth more. We can't afford less. With the cost of living spiralling upwards, we simply can't afford a pay rise that's less than we're worth. Make sure you use your voice to decide our next step on pay. The consultation closes on 27 May 2022.

Being a member of UNISON is more than just carrying a membership card…

About us

UNISON is the UK’s largest trade union, serving more than 1.3 million members. We represent full-time and part-time staff who provide public services. In Higher Education, members can be employed by universities directly, or work for a Student Union or contractor supplying services.

Here at the University of the West of England  we represent staff workingl in IT, Finance, RBI, SAS, FSCM, LCI, projects, laboratories, studios and technical areas, in fact, we represent Professional Service staff across all of our sites, along with staff at The Students Union at UWE.

We negotiate nationally and locally to protect pay, terms and conditions and to prevent members from being outsourced to private companies. UNISON representatives help to ensure a safe working environment.

UNISON campaigns for decent pay in universities – including a living wage for the lowest paid – as well as an eradication of the gender pay gap and to stop the use of zero hour contracts and the casualisation of work.
